The Exhibition

The original exhibition, on view at the UMKC Gallery of Art in the first quarter of 2020, took the viewer through two separate rooms: one dark, one light. The dark room explored observation and presented scientific information, including the 16 minute video, A Drawn Line, below. The second room featured interpretive works of art by four inter-generational artists: Jason Pollen, William Plummer, Mol Mir and Steph Nowotarski.

We invite you to explore the media and the artwork through the documentation of the original exhibition below.

About the Exhibit

Four intergenerational and interdisciplinary artists have plunged into the muck of local Kansas City waterways and emerged with an even greater understanding for the complexity found where, at first glance, there appears to be little to look at.

This immersive installation at the UMKC Gallery of Art, featuring researchers and artists from the Stowers Institute of Medical Research and the Kansas City Art Institute, celebrates the joy of discovery, inviting visitors to engage with and observe planarian flatworms on micro, macro, and life-size scales. Explore our interpretations and examine your own in this body of work featuring video projection, live planarians, and individual responses from each artist.

What can these flatworms teach us about being human?
